I had a brunette baby that was destined to wear a hat for the rest of her life, as she was related to Curly Duke.

However after seeing Dawn Laws tutorial on curling the babies hair , I decided to give it a go, adding my own twist to the process.

Now first I removed the baby’s head, this was done by unhooking each leg stringing, which then allowed the head to be removed. I then removed the metal hook from inside the babies head, leaving the plastic neck ring intact.

I also took the opportunity whilst the baby was apart to give her a thorough clean.

To Start you will need some pipe cleaners. I purchased mine from Hobby craft 100 for £3 and they are quite long so you can get 4 curlers out of 1 pipe cleaner. You will need approximately 60 curlers.

IMG_3754

You will also need a container with water in it, a comb,  and scissors to cut the pipe cleaners with.

IMG_3753

I found it easier to curl the hair by damping the comb in the water and then running it through the hair, if the hair dries out before you finish curling it then just damp it again.

I started at the back of the head, section in the hair and following the hair line as best I could.

IMG_3756

IMG_3759

IMG_3760

When you have sectioned  off the hair you are going to curl, pick up you curler and bend it in half so that it is going to surround the hair. Squeeze the curler together so that the hair is trapped inside and pull towards you until you can just see the hair in the curler and then, use your fingers to curl the curler under until it is tight to the head.

IMG_3761

IMG_3762

Once the curler is tight to the head, at the open end of the curler, bend the curler ends, one up and back and one under and back on itself so it traps the curler, keeping it in place. repeat this process until all the hair is curled. Always curl the hair under.

IMG_3763

IMG_3764

IMG_3767

IMG_3768

IMG_3770

When you have covered the head in curlers., you will need 3 freezer bags.

IMG_3771

Open the first freezer bag and place the head into it, take out as much air as you can and tie the bag in a knot.

IMG_3772

Do the same with the 2nd bag

IMG_3773

And again with the 3rd bag

IMG_3774

This is where my way is different too Dawns.

You will need a large saucepan with a lid. Place the saucepan filled with water on the hob until it boils and then turn it down to simmer.

IMG_3765

make sure you have a pair of tongs and a ceramic bowl ready.

Place the head into the simmering water using the tongs, so you do not burn yourself. Once the head is in the saucepan, place the lid on and begin to time it. depending on  how tight you would like you curls.

IMG_3775

IMG_3776

IMG_3777

IMG_3782

IMG_3781

The baby head on the right was simmered for five minutes.

IMG_3746

IMG_3745 The babies head on the left is the one we are working on now and I have decided to simmer her head for 10 minutes. Once the time is up, remove the babies head from the saucepan using the tongs and place it in the freezer bags into a ceramic bowl.

IMG_3778IMG_3780

IMG_3782

The freezer bags will cool vey quickly, unwrap each bag separately, you can pull it apart, rather than undo the knot. The reason I use 3 bags is to protect the head and to allow if 1 bag should split. Using this method the babies head does not get wet, just slightly damp from the steam, which is what curls it. Once you have the head released, you can leave it for about 20mins until it is dry and then take the curlers out or you can speed up the process to five minutes by using a hairdryer over the head with the curlers in for a couple of minutes and then take the curlers out, Hey presto 1 curled baby head.

Please be aware that I do not take responsibility for your dolls. I am not an expert and if you try this it is at your own risk. I don’t know how long the curls will last and  if they will loosen over time , but if they do , you have the option of re-doing them.

IMG_3783

The one on the right was simmered for 5 minutes and the one on the left for 10 minutes.

I think they look very happy, what do you think?

This little lady is a 1970, all white stringing Sasha doll, which I believe to be a London Girl. I say I believe because she came to me naked and I added her London girl outfit later. Her hair is two tone blonde with a centre parting  almost to he nape of her neck. Her hair is long and a bit dry to the ends. Her fringe is correct for her year and will need a bit of re-styling to make it lay flat. Her face paint is lovely. She has her original all white stringing which is a bit loose but she holds a pose well. She will come wearing the London Girl outfit. Please look at all the photos and if you are interested in purchasing her, please leave a comment with your details and I will get back to you.

IMG_3799

This young lady was originally  a Trendon Marina Sasha doll, unfortunately she lost most of her hair. I decided to have her totally reinvented as she is today. Her hair was re-rooted for me by Alison Parnell with a single fringe and she has a small centre parting. Her hair is almost black, thick and long. Kendal Hackney kindly let me use a photo of one of her NP girls, to send to Shelly, so that I could have them painted in that style. Shelly has signed her foot.  Marina has been with me a few years now and I have decided it is time to move her onto a new home. She has her original stringing which is in good order. She will come wearing the blue gingham outfit. If you are interested in purchasing Marina please leave a comment with your details and I will get back to you. Please look at all the photos.

Sunday had come around much too quickly and it was hard to believe that this would be out last day together.

Breakfast was delightful and the hostess at my table this time was Jeanna Bauer and out hostess gift was  a little box full of sweets, toys and accessories for Sasha, Gregor and baby. We also received a Sashapotmus onesie for baby, plus sewing patterns for baby.  Photos of which I shall share with you on my last post. here are some photos from out last breakfast together.

At the end of breakfast we gave a warm heart felt round of applause for our wonderful hosts, Charla, Karen and Norvell. Thank you so much ladies for my first Sasha Festival in the USA.

IMG_3642

IMG_3643

All too soon it was time to finish packing and as my flight wasn’t until the evening I had some time to kill, and on my way back through the bar I came across this young lady.

IMG_1213

IMG_1217

IMG_1216

IMG_1214

She belongs to Sophia McClain ( I hope I have that right), she is a very early rubber head studio doll. Sophia gave me permission to hold her and photograph her. She is very tactile and much more beautiful in reality.

Now then as if holding an early studio doll was not a great way to end a Sasha festival, the next thing I know I was kidnapped by some very lovely ladies, bundled into a car and taken to a flea market.

There were a few Sasha dolls there, but very highly priced. This little sandy baby was on another stall with a reasonable price of $85.

IMG_3644

I couldn’t resist photographing this

IMG_3645

Thanks to Lynne Field, Heidi Wheeler,Barbie Hart, Pat Pellerito, Sheila Foery for kidnapping me and looking after me until it was time for my flight home, I has a fantastic time.

Now I would like to share with you some of my favourite photos from The Sasha Festival.Starting with:

Forever Young was the Festival theme this year and I remember my Mother saying that although your body aged  in your mind you were forever young and it is so true.

The next part of the programme were craft workshops and the craft this year was to make felt finger puppets. I must apologise that I took these photos on my return home as I was so engrossed in actually doing the craft , that I did not take any photos at the time.

IMG_3677

There was a choice between a monkey, cat,  parrot, elephant and dog.

I chose the Elephant and dog and these are my efforts below.

IMG_3675

IMG_3676

After the crafting was over it was time to get ready for Dinner.

As we entered the hall I was asked to pick a bar of chocolate from four different flavours and as dark chocolate with hazelnuts was on the menu, that was the one for me.

The wonderful hall we were having our dinner in had beautiful ceiling lights, which I thought were worth a mention.

IMG_3622

I made my way to a table where Heidi Wheeler was the Hostess. I received a lovely dress made by Heidi as a hostess gift from her which I will show in my last post.

IMG_3618

I discovered that Monica Jarpey also has a penchant for dark  chocolate.

Here are some photos from around the Dining room. The dinner was a three course meal and very yummy.

I was very pleased to see Helen the wandering doll again.
